NFL Points Per Game Analysis

The single most predictive team stat in NFL handicapping

Points per game (PPG) is the simplest and most powerful team metric in football. It rolls every offensive efficiency, every red-zone conversion, and every special-teams contribution into one number. By comparing each team's home and away PPG averages across decades of data, we can build a baseline expectation for any matchup before any other adjustment is made.

Home Splits

The home PPG leaderboard is led by teams that have built their identity around offensive consistency. Green Bay, Pittsburgh, New England, Denver and Kansas City all average a high enough win rate that, when they enter a game with the PPG edge over their opponent, they win at well above the league baseline.

Away Splits

On the road, the gap between great and mediocre teams widens. The visitors at the top of this table are the teams that travel well — disciplined offenses that don't melt on the road. The W% column tells the story: road teams with the PPG edge win straight up at a rate well above any naive baseline.

How To Use PPG

  • Use season-long PPG as your starting expectation for every matchup.
  • Apply the home/away split — most teams have noticeably different home vs. road scoring profiles.
  • Combine with line-based filters (see the ATS Home / ATS Away articles) before committing to a side.
